The Art of the Written Thank You

10.07.2013

my_first_Thank_You

Now that school is back in session I am reminded that the life of a parent is busier not just during the week, but all weekend long. The reason? BIRTHDAY PARTIES. The onslaught of invitations to these precious events has prompted me to write this post for a product that is not only near and dear to my heart, but one that I think parents (OK mostly moms) would benefit from immensely. I know I did. This is the story of the creation of “My First Thank You Notes.” These awesome kits are my personal attempt to keep the art of the written thank you note alive!

Growing up I was taught that you always wrote a thank you note for any gift. In fact, I remember not even calling my grandmother to thank her for the twenty bucks, but immediately sitting down to draft her a written thank you note. But Noni was ALWAYS sending us twenty-dollar bills, even on St. Patrick’s Day! So that meant I had to get creative. I remember developing a systematic and foolproof method for thank you note writing. I never actually thought that I would have a use for this until it came time for me to instill the “art of thank you note writing” in my own children, hence preserving the good manners my own mother tried so desperately to grace us with.

[box]GROWING UP I WAS TAUGHT THAT YOU ALWAYS WROTE A THANK YOU NOTE FOR ANY GIFT. IN FACT, I REMEMBER NOT EVEN CALLING MY GRANDMOTHER TO THANK HER FOR THE TWENTY BUCKS BUT IMMEDIATELY SITTING DOWN TO DRAFT HER A WRITTEN THANK YOU NOTE.[/box]

uma1So it all started when my daughter, Uma, was in Kindergarten and she was writing thank you notes for her birthday gifts. As any mom these days knows, one is pretty much commanded by politically correct standards to invite every student in the class to the party, so in this case that meant 16 thank you notes. . . all hand written. . . by a five-year old. Needless to say, that took some time, about 2 weeks from what I recall; roughly one per day. It also took some serious effort and determination from both my daughter AND me. My First Thank You NoteI began by drafting a fill-in style version of the thank you note, a cheat sheet so to speak, that my daughter could use. She copied the words on the card and when she got to the line left blank, we filled in the specific name, gift, etc. for each card.

The day that poor kid finished drafting her last thank you note, it sparked a whole plethora of emotions, but mostly pride in my daughter and motivation to make a product that would mean WE NEVER had to go through THAT again.  The next day, I began the conception our My First Thank You Note card kits. I loved the idea for the fill-in note cards only slightly fill in photomore than I loved the idea of doing my part in society to keep the art of the written thank you note alive for future generations!

BELOW ARE MY RULES FOR THANK YOU NOTE WRITING, each of which has been incorporated into these totally awesome modern thank you cards for kids. And even cooler (OK, not a word but just go with it), Uma got to put her own artwork and handwriting on the back of the box.  She thinks she’s famous now. And in my eyes, she’s right.

Most Sincerely,

Chunky Monkey Birthday Cake

10.07.2012

We love seeing our designs in action, and seeing a Chunky Monkey inspired birthday cake was a blast! We recently worked with a client to craft an invitation for her little girl’s first birthday. We based the design on our Chunky Monkey letterpress birth announcement, a design featuring cute and colorful illustrations perfect for a playful first birthday!

The client loved the Chunky Monkey design so much that she sent a picture of it to local cake maker Jean Schapowal to see if she could bring the invitation design to life in the form of a cake!  You can see from the picture that this woman didn’t miss a beat.  She did an amazing job.  Not only was the cake absolutely beautiful but it tasted delicious.  The little added touch was to use a banana pudding filling.  Their little monkey just loved it!

Our Newest Addition – Heidelberg Press

11.04.2010

Say hello to the newest addition to our little Heidelberg press family.   We just had our first cylinder press, delivered and it’s a KSBA 18 x 22.  Tomorrow it will be installed and we’ll be up and running in about a week, after we find a few minor parts and have the roller cores recovered.  Here in the pressroom we’re looking forward to faster runs, more coverage and deep impression.

Letterpress Save the Date Printed on Bamboo Paper

8.12.2009

We just ran our first Save the Date on bamboo paper and it printed really well.  The bamboo sheet is a little bit harder than the 100% cotton rag paper that we normally use but this sheet ran just fine and printed beautifully.

From what my distributor tells me, the bamboo paper isn’t actually 100% bamboo fiber, it has about 10% cotton rag mixed into it to soften it up a bit.

DMCA Notice

8.10.2009

You learn something new everyday – we should all be so fortunate!  On Thursday, I received an email from my webhost that they received a DMCA complaint involving my domain, elumdesigns.com.  Having never heard of a DMCA notice I immediately clicked the link in the email to read what it was all about.  It seemed that I was being accused of “infringing on copyrighted material” that belonged to Dolce Press.  Quite shocked, I immediately forwarded the email and notice to my copyright attorney for review.  For those of you that have never heard of a DMCA notice, click this link to learn about it:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Act

In a nutshell, Elum is being accused of infringing the “copyright protected” designs of Dolce Press, which I believe were copied from us in the first place.  Make sense?  I don’t think so either.

Elum has the right to display images of what we believe are infringing copies of Elum proprietary designs.  The images from Dolce Press were placed on our site to illustrate our belief that Elum’s protected designs were being copied by Dolce Press in violation of Elum’s rights, and to allow consumers and the industry to make up their own minds about it.  That is a fair use under copyright law.

In order to avoid costly attorney fees and all of the BS associated with having to deal with a situation like this, we decided to remove the Dolce Press images that we believe were “inspired” by our designs in the first place and just get on with business, and life.  We made our point – we got Dolce’s attention, and we have made it clear that Elum will protect its proprietary rights, as should everyone who feels that they have been violated.

If you believe a website is displaying your copyrighted materials without permission, you may be able to send a DMCA takedown notice to the site host and have the offending material removed.  Click this link for more information:

Letterpress business cards – Style Me Pretty

7.28.2009

How sweet are these letterpress business cards??  If  you’re familiar with Style Me Pretty you will know that Abby recently changed up her website and logo not too long ago.  And we all know that when you decide to change your logo there are few must haves and business cards are one of them.

Abby has been so kind to us by featuring Elum invitations on Style Me Pretty we just had to print these for her as a way of saying thanks for all of her support over the past few years.  We printed them on 110lb Lettra and as you can see the impression is to die for – this is a perfect example as to why we love letterpress printing.  The type is sunken super deep into the soft cotton paper and the ink is so perfectly set at the bottom of the impression – printed perfection!

India Inspired Letterpress Wedding Invitation

7.23.2009

We just finished printing this amazing India Inspired letterpress wedding invitation that was designed by Kristi and Ravi, both graphic designers.  When we saw this design we instantly fell in love with it and basically had to print it.

The invitation, reception and reply card were inspired by the bright colors and patterns of Indian textiles and are printed on ultra thick 600 gsm cotton rag paper. The belly band (not shown) and informal note is printed on 300 gsm cotton rag Copperplate.   The invitation is letterpress printed with two custom colors and the surrounding pattern is blind hit.  This is one of those invitations that when you receive it you just have to reply “yes” as fast as you can.  You don’t even need to read it or know what the event is, you just know you’re going – its that good!

Letterpress Invitation for a Farm Wedding

7.20.2009

We had the honor of printing this sweet farm wedding invitation for Vermont couple, Catherine and Jeff Hannoosh.  The invitation suite was designed by the couple and printed on eco-friendly 100% cotton rag paper.  The silhouettes of the barn and the animals are sunken deep into the soft cotton paper leaving a beautiful impression.

farm wedding

As you can see the wedding reception is taking place at The Skinner Barn in Vermont.  Having a farm wedding is becoming more and more popular and from what I hear, farms that host weddings are starting to have a hard time keeping up with demand!  This is something to keep to keep in mind when planning a wedding, as booking for popular venues goes quickly! Having a farm wedding can also help cut costs because you are allowed to bring in your own catering and music.

We love working with couples to bring their custom designs to life! If you’d rather leave the design to us, browse our letterpress invitation designs here and our design team will work with you to craft an invitation suite perfectly tailored to your personal style.
